About Us
We’re a small team of like-minded individuals who live in a beautiful valley enveloped by the majestic trees and peaks of the Selkirk Mountains. We are surrounded by the friendly faces of amazing customers in a vibrant, artistic community. We appreciate clean air, fresh water, good food and fine coffee. It is our goal as a company to provide the highest quality of life possible for our producers, our customers, and ourselves. That’s why we choose to buy organically grown and fairly traded coffee whenever possible and offer sustainable jobs to our co-workers. We don’t take ourselves too seriously, but we do make customer service and accountability paramount.
Cafe in the Heart of Town
Just one block above vibrant Baker Street, we are the hub for creativity and connecting with the community. In the warmer months, you will see folks spread throughout the perennial garden, socializing and enjoying the serene setting. In the winter, snow enthusiasts will line up to get a shot of caffeine before hitting the mountains, and others gather around tables taking refuge from the cold in the cosy environment. Being right in the heart of Nelson allows us to be a space for our community to connect, indulge and relax in.
Our Blends
When we first started roasting coffee we kept it simple and offered our customers single origins to choose from. Thanks to generous feedback from those first customers we began to experiment with blends of roasted coffee, first combining different growing regions then distinct roast levels as well. Now we are proud to offer twenty-two blends to choose from, as well as one single origin. Our blends are all created after roasting, meaning that we roast each specific ingredient before mixing. This gives us the freedom to mix roast levels and origins as well being able to reproduce some pretty wild recipes consistently. We stick to strict purchasing practices when we source our green beans, predominantly maintaining a twenty-five year relationship with a very special broker at Royal Coffee in Oakland, California, as well as several Canadian sources. Chiefly amongst those is a direct relationship with an amazing cooperative in Guatemala, which you can learn more about by following the links on the Justicia Blend page. We buy fairly traded and organic beans whenever possible, and these offerings make up approximately 97% of our inventory. For more information, please contact the roastery. Enjoy!
